March 2001
Pending Issues - #3
Resource Economics
LLC has completed its March 2001 Pending Issues of our Timber Supply
and Product Demand Service. The March 2001 pending issue contains
four sections. The first is a descriptive update of the macroeconomic
drivers for the US and Canada used in our December 2000 Long Term
Outlook. The update includes information that was not available
before the completion of our Long Term Outlook, this includes information
from the 4th quarter of 2000. Comparisons are also made with the
actual year-end data and our December 2000 projected year data.
The second section
is a 32-year historical analysis of the primary wood products sector
including housing, softwood lumber production, consumption, lumber
prices, and stumpage prices. The past and current trends and relationships
are discussed with an outlook on future trends.
The third section
provides a review South American wood supplies. Provided by Robert
Flynn, the review looks at the remaining non-Canada sources of imports
which are supplied by South America, New Zealand, and Europe in
order of importance. Imports of wood products from South America
have increased substantially over the past few years. Mr. Flynn
examines their importance and future levels into the US market.
The fourth section
compares and updates our composite product prices and log prices
in our 2000 Long Term Outlook, with the year-end actual prices.
Composite product prices are projected and explained quarterly for
the year 2000. The impacts of the reduction in 2001 US GDP estimates
are also presented.
